The republic of Maldives commonly known as the Maldives Island is an island nation comprising a group of atolls in the Indian Ocean. The Maldives is located south of India's Lakshadweep islands and about 700 Kilometer south-west of Sri Lanka.The name "Maldives" refer from Maale Dhivehi Raajje (The island of Kingdom under the authority of "Male". Some people believe that the name Maldives derives from the Sanskrit "Maladvipa" meaning "garland of islands" or from "Mahila dvipa" meaning "island of women" . Classical Sanskrit texts mention the "Hundred Thousand Island" (Lakshadweepa), also "Laccadives" and " Chagos island" groups. The Tamil "Malai Tivu" meaning "island of hills".
Some medieval Arab traveller such as Ibn Batuta called the islands, "Mahal Dibiyat" from the Arabic world mahal(palace). The Maldives is the smallest predominantly Muslim nation in the world. Maldives islands consist of 1190  islands grouped into 26 natural atolls. The atoll of the Maldives are formed from coral structures. The atoll are part of a greater structure known as the Laccadives-Changos Ridge and located at the crossways of the Indian Ocean shipping lanes on the man seaway around to Indian subcontinent, the Maldives has long been a meeting point for African, Arab, Malay, and Indonesia mariners.
